11.6 POST-HYPNOTIC SUGGESTIONS AND CUES SHOULD B E SPECIFIC
THE “SUGGESTIONS” provided should be specific, in the sense of being tailored to the relevant situation.
In addition, they should incorporate the “three basic psychological principles of suggestions”, as well as “imagery and positive visualization”.
The process of trying to improve concentration/focus serves as a good example.
The best approach is to start with one type of concentration, like playing cards. The greater the focus is on that objective, the more effective the work conducted during the trance will be.
The goal is to develop a generalization that can subsequently be applied to other spheres, in which concentration is also fundamental, e.g. to be more focused in sports, at work, school, etc.
This example is fleshed out in greater detail below with a discussion of the post-hypnotic suggestions and cues that would be most effective to improve concentration…
When I sit down to play cards, there might be some distractions – the rain outside, or the wind blowing in through an open door and scattering the cards. I can leave the door open, or close it.
The next time I go into a room to play cards, with the objective of playing cards, or in any other moment that I want to eliminate distractions…I will remember that I can close the door.
I might speak, listen and function like normal, but the rain and the wind, the noises, voices and/or images that might have previously distracted me remain outside, on the other side of the closed door. I hope that there are some distractions, and by means of these, to enjoy my state of concentration more and more… so that it will continue to improve and get better and better.
Imagine that someone finds it challenging to read and he/she wants to work on relevant post- hypnotic suggestions and cues to be used in self-hypnosis.
—Reading, in my case. I find it hard to concentrate when I read, I “space out”.
—How many pages per day would you like to read?
—I don’t know. It depends on what I’m reading, since all books are different.
—How many types of books do you want to read?
—I’m not sure. I’d like to read by subject. So that it’s like closing a chapter on a topic.
—Good, so then how much do you want to read? It could be one book with only two chapters. How will you know what you want in this respect?
It becomes evident that in order to give an instruction that incorporates a suggestion, there must be a gradual process of distilling and specifying what is needed. If this is not done, the objective remains too vague.
—I’m sorry to be so persistent about this issue.
—I would like to read around 50 to 70 pages.
—How many words per minute can you read?
—I’ve never counted.
—Do you read at an average speed?
—A bit faster.
—Maybe around 500 words per minute. In general, people read around 350 per minute.
—Around 425, I think.
—425!
—Let’s round off to 500, is that okay? Okay, do you know approximately how many words there are on a page?
—I haven’t thought about it.
